CHILDREN OF EDEN – THIS WEEKEND!
I saw the spring  play last night at the high school and it was outstanding! The cast and the setting was phenomenal and there was a great turnout. You still have an opportunity to see it tonight or tomorrow at 7:30 pm. Tickets are only available at the door at this point. Freely based on the story of Genesis, Children Of Eden is a frank, heartfelt and often humorous examination of the age-old conflict between parents and children.
Adam, Eve, Noah and the "Father" who created them deal with the headstrong, cataclysmic actions
of their respective children. The show ultimately delivers a bittersweet but inspiring message:
that "the hardest part of love... is letting go." See it – you won’t be sorry!!

LIVE DISTRICT COURT
Today, approximately 180 students at WBHS welcomed Judge Diane D’Agostini to the media center to witness live court in session. Teacher Alycia Chase arranged the court proceedings with the cooperation of West Bloomfield Community Coalition. Students were captivated as they witnessed two defendants receive sentencing for incidents involving alcohol. One person was a repeat offender involving drunk driving, and the judge delivered a powerful speech when rendering her sentence, stating that she can’t afford to let HIS luck run out. A very emotional film was shown, featuring a young person who was involved in an accident with four friends, one of whom was killed. This young person ended up in prison, and it was some insight on how one’s life can change forever in an instant. There was a Q & A period afterwards, with some very insightful questions asked by our students. Judge D’Agostini has worked with our students in our Political Leadership classes and has been a friend to the school district.
Law Club and AP Government classes have been very busy with students participating in Teen Court, the national E-Congress, participating in Board of Commissioners Youth in Government Day, and traveling to Washington D.C. as part of the Close Up program. Many students have been involved in campaigns working with candidates Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Senator Carl Levin.  Soon they will be involved in Teen Court before Judge Barron in Bloomfield Hills and Judge Kuhn in Waterford. This has been a great learning experience for them!

GLOBAL CITIZEN SCHOLARSHIP
West Bloomfield High School student Hamna Nazir has been named a Global Citizen Scholarship recipient by EF Educational Tours and won a 10-day educational tour to Berlin this July!
Hamna was one of 20 scholarship recipients chosen from among hundreds of applicants from across the United States. She will travel on a 10-day, all-expense paid EF Educational Tour to Berlin this July.
Hamna opened her winning essay with the following Moorish proverb: “He who does not travel does not know the value of men”. She goes on to explain the various experiences in her life that have shaped her identity as a global citizen. Traveling to her mother’s homeland, Pakistan had a powerful impact on her life.
She describes “Sitting in my maternal family’s chak, the Punjabi and Urdu word for village, I witnessed the realities of social and economic inequality…My extended family was no different than me; we laughed at the same jokes, enjoyed the same teenage activities…hoped to see the same change in the world. Despite all of this, our living conditions were very different. While I lived in the affluent Western world, they were barely scraping by and unable to afford an education, something that we often take for granted in America.”
How fortunate we are here in West Bloomfield to be able to obtain a great education and also to become global citizens as well. Congratulations, Hamna - This is an incredible opportunity for you!

Talk Sup't. April 19, 2012

TALK SUP’T. April 19, 2012              Superintendent’s Weekly Blog
BUS VANDALISM
Yesterday, we had yet another incident of vandalism on our fleet of buses, which occurred sometime late Tuesday evening. Approximately 20 buses were damaged when three vandals trespassed into our transportation parking lot and pulled fuses and wires to batteries.
As mandated by the state, in order to count a day of instruction, we must have 70% of our students in attendance. When damage such as this is discovered just as drivers arrive to work, and 20 buses out of our fleet are not operable, a decision needs to be made quickly. That decision was to close the schools. While the damage was not major, the disruption to the school district and the community was significant.
We sense and share the frustration of the students who could not attend class. Nothing disturbs us more than tampering with teaching and learning in our district, which is our business.
After the incident which occurred in January, our district chose to install a newer, more sophisticated security camera system. This is a process in which we meet with suppliers, take bids for systems, and assess the entire yard and surveillance area to determine the best layout for our needs. The order has been in, and will be installed momentarily. Unfortunately, it did not come in enough time to avoid this incident.
In addition, we have completely lit the entire lot all night long (during the dark hours) for a better view. We are working very closely with the police departments and the detective who is working on this case to determine who is at fault for this cowardly act.
Please know that this is as upsetting to everyone at the school district as it is to you. This impacts not just students in classroom, but the entire community as well. Parents such as yourself who are left to make decisions regarding their own work schedule, and plan for care for their children are huge issues, and we understand that and are working to insure that it never occurs again.

CONGRATULATIONS!
BOTH Lisa Perri and Gloria Kollman, have received the 2012 Betty Campion Distinguished Support Service Award. This is the first time ever that there has been a tie for this award! Lisa is Administrative Assistant in the Human Resources office, and Gloria is a Special Education Para-Educator at Roosevelt Elementary.
This award, established in 1990, is a tribute to Betty Campion, a former Oakland Schools (1978-1992) and Walled Lake Board of Education (10 years) trustee, and recognizes one winner from those nominated for the honor. Candidates must be employed in a support position in a local district – transportation, maintenance, custodial, office personnel, food services, or professional support to teachers (including para-educators). (while supplies last!)
Come out to Kroger (4395 Orchard Lake Road, West Bloomfield Township) and let us know about your experience- we'd love to hear feedback on our community project!

GREEN SCHOOLS
The Department of Education recognized Roosevelt Elementary in the Green Ribbon School program. Roosevelt Elementary came in 4th in the State and will receive a certificate recognizing them for reducing environmental impact on their communities, promoting healthy school environments for their students and staff, and offering high-quality environmental education! Principal Dr. Beth Feiten worked with Bill Wold, Operations and Maintenance Supervisor to help Roosevelt achieve this status.
The U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools recognizes schools that are taking a comprehensive approach to "greening" their school. The program incorporates and integrates environmental learning, with activities that maximize positive environmental and health impacts.  State Superintendent of Public Instruction Mike Flanagan said "The greening of schools has several benefits. Students learn the value of environmental stewardship while absorbing an education in scientific principles, and the economical savings that comes from using less purchased energy."
"This Green Ribbon Schools designation signifies that a school is working on the worthwhile goals of sustainability and energy efficiency," said State Board of Education President John C. Austin.

MORE GREEN!
On behalf of the Oakland County and Oakland Schools, West Bloomfield High School has been designated an official Michigan Green School – Emerald Level  for the 2011-2012 program year! WBHS will attend the Fifth Annual Michigan Green Schools Awards Ceremony to accept their award.
It takes extra time, effort, planning, and drive to implement the initiatives outlined in the Green Schools Program. I am so proud of the involvement and leadership of Josh Barclay, in coordinating the Green Schools program as well the efforts of the students, staff, parents, volunteers and school community. Congratulations!! You all radiate awesome!
